Typical Areas Included in a Valuation Survey

 Below is a comprehensive Checklist for this type of survey. The extent of what is included in a survey will vary based on the circumstances and  vessel which is the subject of the survey.  (Applicable to sailing yachts and motor yachts; usually for insurance, finance, or brokerage valuations). 

  • HIN/CIN, builder’s plate, registration, Part I/SSR or national registry
  • Builder,  model, year of build, serial numbers
  • Owner-supplied documentation (invoices, prior surveys, maintenance records)
  • CE/RCD compliance category (if applicable)
  • Tonnage  / principal dimensions
  • Verification of engine serial numbers against paperwork


  

Hull Exterior

  • GRP/FRP: general condition, osmotic activity risk, impact damage, gelcoat issues
  • Steel/Aluminium: corrosion, pitting, weld condition, coatings, UTM if indicated
  • Timber: signs of rot, fastener corrosion, plank seams, sheathing
  • Keel attachment, grounding damage, fairing condition
  • Hull-to-deck joint condition

Deck, Superstructure & Cockpit

  • Core condition (delamination, moisture if GRP)
  • Deck hardware attachment and bedding
  • Windows, hatches, portlights—condition and leakage
  • Pulpit, pushpit, stanchions, guardrails
  • Flybridge structure (motor yachts)

Interior Structure

  • Bulkheads, bonding, tabbing
  • Bilges, stringers, frames
  • Internal  moisture, odours, ventilation


  • Main engine(s): general condition, hours (not verified unless evidence      provided)
  • Gearbox, shaft, stuffing box/seal, P-brackets
  • Propellers: condition, damage, play, corrosion
  • Stern gear and sterndrives (if fitted)
  • Engine mounts and alignment
  • Generator (if fitted)
  • Steering systems (hydraulic/mechanical)
  • Cooling, exhaust, fuel lines, filters
  • Engine room or compartment cleanliness & fire integrity


  • Batteries: type, age, securing, ventilation
  • Battery management, isolators, charging systems
  • AC/DC panels, wiring standards, general condition
  • Shore power system, RCD/ELCB protection
  • Inverters, chargers, alternators


  • Fuel tanks: material, condition (visual), signs of leaks
  • Fuel filters, water separators
  • Fresh water tanks/pumps/heaters
  • Waste/blackwater tanks, venting, seacocks
  • LPG system: locker, regulator, solenoid, leak checks


  • Mast(s), boom, standing rigging (age & visual condition)
  • Running rigging, sheaves, furlers
  • Mast step, chainplates, deck attachment
  • Sails: age and condition (visual only unless otherwise agreed)
  • Reefing systems (in-boom, in-mast, slab)


  (Not a compliance inspection unless specifically requested)

  • Fire extinguishers & firefighting systems
  • Bilge pumps (manual/electric)
  • Lifejackets, lifebuoys, flares
  • EPIRB/PLB
  • Life raft (service date checked)
  • Gas detectors, CO detectors
  • Horn, navigation lights


  • Chartplotters, radar, AIS, VHF/DSC
  • Autopilot
  • Instruments (depth, wind, speed, log)
  • Compass condition
  • Entertainment systems (if relevant to valuation)


  • Upholstery, joinery, odours, moisture
  • Galley appliances, cooker gimbals, LPG compliance
  • Heads, showers, pumps, seacocks
  • Heating, AC, refrigeration
  • Interior fit-out quality & wear


  • Dinghy/tender condition
  • Outboard engine(s)
  • Davits, cranes, passerelles
  • Windlass, anchor, chain condition & length


  • Paintwork, varnish, gelcoat
  • Teak decks (wear, seams, fastenings)
  • Upholstery, covers, biminis, canopies


  • Comparable vessel research
  • Recent sales or listings
  • Builder reputation & demand in the market
  • Engine hours & equipment package
  • Condition ratings (Excellent / Good / Fair / Poor)
  • Replacement value estimate (if required)
  • Forced-sale or insurance valuation (if required)


  • No destructive testing
  • No sail trials/sea trials unless specifically requested
  • No rig climb unless agreed
  • No removal of panels, furniture, head linings
  • Engine evaluation is visual only unless oil analysis or mechanical inspection      agreed
